Winter service call surge

Dealership winter service call surge: tire swaps, batteries and warning lights.

The first cold snap sends the same few requests to your service line at once: tire swaps, weak batteries, winter checks and tire-pressure warning lights. See which public thresholds start each call, and how Cleo books or hands off the calls your team cannot reach.

The cold-snap ladder

What starts each call, and how it is handled.

The cold-snap ladder.

Public thresholds, from the first cool weeks to a hard freeze, and the kind of call each one brings. The calls are examples, not measured shares.

  1. Below 45°Fdaily, and staying there

Michelin's guide says to switch to winter tires when daily temperatures stay below 45°F, and not to wait for the first snow. The same moment is the time to check the battery, fluids and wipers.

The call it brings“Can I book my tire swap and a winter check?”

  2. Every 10°F droptire pressure

Tire pressure falls about 1 psi for every 10°F drop. A 40°F drop, such as 75°F in September to 35°F on a December morning, is about 4 psi.

The call it brings“A tire pressure warning came on this morning.”

  3. 32°Ffreezing

A car battery loses about 35% of its strength.

The call it brings“It clicked and won't start.”

  4. 0°Fhard freeze

A car battery loses about 60% of its strength.

The call it brings“The battery is dead. Can I come in today?”

Pressure and battery figures are rules of thumb from the sources below, not a forecast for your stores. Not every region reaches 0°F.

Tire swap“Can I get my winter tires on?”Michelin ties the swap to daily temperatures that stay below 45°F and warns against waiting for the first snow. Shops fill fast: in November 2025 a Quebec garage owner told CBC, “We're pretty much booked for a good two weeks solid.”Asks for the vehicle and what it needs, matches the request to a service on your scheduler's menu, reads the open times your scheduler returns and confirms only after the booking succeeds. It looks up to 8 weeks ahead, and when no time fits it offers a callback from your service team.Hold time guide →
Weak battery or no start“It won't start this morning.”AAA reports that a battery loses about 35% of its strength at 32°F and about 60% at 0°F, and warns that a weak battery can leave a driver with a car that will not start in a cold snap.Takes the vehicle and the problem in the caller's words and books the next open visit. When the caller needs a person, it transfers to a destination you set if that person is open, and otherwise takes a callback request for your team. Cleo does not send roadside help.Call scripts →
Warning light“A light just came on.”Tire pressure falls about 1 psi for every 10°F drop (General Motors service bulletin, February 2023), so a tire filled in September can be several psi low by December (Michelin). That can bring on the tire-pressure warning.Treats a symptom such as a warning light as a diagnostic request and books the visit. You can limit diagnostic visits to certain days and a latest time. Cleo books the visit; your technicians diagnose the cause.
Winter check“I want it checked before winter.”Michelin says the moment to fit winter tires is also the time to check the battery, top up winter-rated fluids and inspect the wiper blades.Inspections are one of the maintenance requests the booking tool recognizes. Cleo books them the same way as a swap, and on Xtime you can set an earliest time and hide same-day openings to protect the day.Cleo with Xtime →

How many winter calls do you miss?

Pull last year’s first cold week from your phone system: calls by hour, and how many reached voicemail or hung up. Compare shares of calls rather than totals, so the numbers hold as your volume changes.

How far out is your swap calendar?

Check how many days out your next tire swap opening is on a normal day, then on the busiest day last winter. When the calendar is full, callers still need an answer, a callback or a different day.

The thresholds here are public rules of thumb. Your first cold week depends on your region, so read the dates from your own phone log.

Each figure is one store, and none is a winter figure: they cover late September to October 2026. A booking-outcome call means a booking succeeded in Cleo’s call log. It is not a completed appointment or revenue. Your results depend on call volume, caller needs, open capacity in your schedule and your setup.

AAA Automotive Research Center reports that at 32°F a car’s battery loses about 35 percent of its strength, and at 0°F about 60 percent.

Before the first cold snap

Three settings to check.

01 · Rings and hours

Choose how many rings your team gets before Cleo picks up (up to 6), and set holiday and special hours so the days around a storm or a long weekend are right. After hours, Cleo answers directly.

02 · Booking rules

Decide which times Cleo may offer. Diagnostic visits can be limited to certain days and a latest time, and on Xtime you can also hide same-day openings and set an earliest time, so a rush of calls does not fill the day.

03 · Handoff

Confirm who receives transferred calls and who works the callback requests. When no time fits or a person is needed, Cleo transfers to someone who is open, or takes a callback request that becomes a task for your team.

Settings are per store. Confirm your scheduler, opening hours and transfer destinations before the season starts.

FAQ

Still have questions?

When does the winter service rush start?

It follows the weather more than the calendar. Michelin ties the tire swap to daily temperatures that stay below 45°F, and AAA says a battery loses about 35 percent of its strength at 32°F. Your own phone log from last year's first cold week is the best guide. This page does not publish a Cleo seasonal call-volume trend: the stores on Cleo change too much from month to month to compare winter with fall fairly.
